Pellets - A fuel of The Future

Pellets are granules of a circular diameter of 6 to 14 mm and a length of 1 to 5 cm. They are pressed under high pressure through specially designed matrix's (dies).

Most often, they are made from wood or biomass (wood waste, paper, sawdust, wood, crops) without any chemical additives. However, pellets could be also made from straw, seaweed or other biomaterial.

Pellets are a fuel for the future, reliable, loose and highly dense (up to 1,4 kg/dm). They contain a negligible amount of water (around 10 %), have a high energy output (up to 18,5 MJ/kg), a low ash residue (up to 1 % for wood), they are easy to handle and their combustion has a minimal or negative environmental impact.

Pellets can be automatically transported from storage to boiler, thus providing a non-stop source of energy. Pellets are resistant to shocks, take up a small storage area, and they can be combusted in an automated process making the use of them even more efficient.

The price of pellets is also favourable when compared to other fuels. Pellets are viewed as a fuel of the future. One ton of pellets has the equivalent heat output of 1000 liters of heating oil or equivalent natural gas!

Production

Pellets are made in an extruding die press. The feedstock is usually pure wood biomass. Sometimes a small amount natural binder can be added to facilitate the process.

Pellets meet the highest criteria set by the 'eco' culture and make for an easy heating option, while the costs are comparable to fossil fuels which have a damaging ecological effect. Today, the production of pellets is a rapidly developing fuel industry.
